Garhwal University Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry is one of the few departments of HNB Garhwal University which has been imparting post graduate teaching in Chemistry since the inception of university in 1973. The growth of the organic Chemistry research was pioneered by the drive, sincerity of purpose and commitment to the subject by late Prof I. P. Varshney who laid a strong foundation for research in the area of natural products chemistry.

A strong faculty of 5 Professors and 3 Readers besides some part time teachers support the teaching at UG and PG level. The chemistry department has four main establishments housing its teaching facilities- lecture theatres, undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories and instrumental room.

Admissions in M Sc in Garhwal University

The admission to the M.Sc. programme is based on the marks obtained at the B.Sc. degree and is solely on the merit. (M.Sc. II Chemistry Syllabus, session 2007-2008 onwards)

D. Phil.   

The D.Phil.  programme involves the submission of a thesis and an open defence. In past 20 years 75 students have obtained D.Phil.. degree from the department. The research output is reflected in the quality of publications.

Instrument facilities in Chemistry Department of Garhwal University

The research facilities in the department include Beckman 64, UV Spectrophotometer, Pye Unicam SP3-200 IR Spectrophotometer, Chemito Gas Chromatograph, HPLC (Waters) besides other minor equipments.

Library in Chemistry Department of Garhwal University  

The department is maintaining a small library comprising of the books purchased for postgraduate courses and research. There are about 2000 books in the departmental library.

Seminar, symposia and workshops  

The department organizes seminar/symposia and workshop on regular basis. In last five years the department has organized one national symposium and one national workshop.

More than 250 papers are published by faculty members in various national and international journals.

The department has collaborative research programmes with many research institutions both in India and abroad. These include CDRI, IARI, FRI, IIP, Spic Science Foundation, University of Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester, University of Pavia, Italy, Ohio University, USA , Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan

Achievements and awards of Chemistry Department of Garhwal University

Faculty members have been honoured by various awards and fellowship for research work in India and abroad viz., INSA/RS visiting fellowship of UK, Visiting Professorship of Nagoya University, Japan, DST-SERC visiting fellowship for research at National Institute, Fulbright Fellowship for USA , CICOPS Fellowship for Italy. Departmental faculty has got adequate international research experience of working with Eminent Professors in collaborative research projects abroad.
