The Department of Physics in HNB Garhwal University was established in the year 1962 as one of the Science Departments of the Government Degree College and was upgraded to the Post-graduate level in 1972.

With the establishment of the Garhwal University, in 1973, this department was taken over by the University as the center for UG, PG teaching and Research activities in Physics under its constituent setup. Research work in various branches began with the establishment of the University. The Department made the proposal for establishing a computer centre under it during the Sixth Five Year Plan.

The Centre was sanctioned on the basis of our proposal but subsequently it was separated from the Physics Department and became an independent unit. The proposal for a University Science Instrumentation Center was also moved by this Department. The same was sanctioned by the UGC during the Seventh Plan. Now it is also working as an independent unit. With the establishment of the University Campus at Chauras, the Department has been shifted partially (PG and Research) to this new campus. Undergraduate classes are to be shifted to this new campus in due course. The Department is maintaining a rich library. A well equipped Computer Lab has been established in the Department under DST-FIST program. .

Research Activities of Physics Department of Garhwal University

Besides teaching, the faculty of the Physics Department is actively engaged in research in the following areas:

• Condensed Matter Physics- Ferroelectrics, Ferro-fluids & High-Temperature Superconductors
• Theoretical & Particle Physics- Mathematical Physics; High Energy Physics: Magnetic Monopoles, Gauge
