The former vice-chairman of the State Forest and Environment Advisory Committee, Anil Baluni has written letters to the Nainital High Court Chief Justice and Uttarakhand Chief Minister seeking formation of a fast track court for quick redressal of cases involving notorious wildlife poachers who are presently out on bail.
Talking to The Pioneer, Baluni said that in his letter to the Chief Justice and Chief Minister, he has stated that he worked in the field of wildlife security during the past three years in his capacity as the vice chairman of State Forest and Environment Advisory Committee. However, many of the notorious wildlife commodity smugglers and
poachers involved in poaching tigers, leopards, bears and other wildlife are presently either out on bail or absconding.
“Seasoned poachers like Balku Bawaria, Gopi Bawaria, Tota Ram, Ramesh Kanjar, Ali Khan and Lalita Kutiyal alias Didi are out on bail. All of them were arrested in the past for involvement in poaching wildlife and playing a crucial role in smuggling wildlife contraband to Nepal. These criminals have no vocational skills and rely solely on wildlife poaching and
smuggling to make money,†he stressed.
According to Baluni, the longer these poachers remain free, the greater is the risk posed by them to the wildlife of Uttarakhand. Considering this, he has requested the Uttarakhand HC Chief Justice Barin Ghosh to facilitate formation of a fast track court so that cases pertaining to these poachers can be processed in a couple of months.
“I am also seeking the opinion of my legal advisors to ascertain whether I myself can also intervene legally in these cases, because I want to
ensure that these poachers are sent to jail for their crimes and not left free,†Baluni averred.
