The popular Gauchar Mela was inaugurated here on Wednesday by the State Agriculture and Medical Education Minister Harak Singh Rawat. The Minister said that the Government will take necessary steps to preserve this State level cultural and industrial development fair which has established its own identity in Uttarakhand.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the 63rd cultural and industrial Gauchar Mela, Rawat said that Gairsain in Chamoli district had gained a new identity in the nation since the State Government had decided to construct a Vidhan Sabha building and hold one Assembly session in a year at Gairsain.
Such developments will speed up developmental works in Gairsain and other mountainous regions which in turn will also help mitigate migration from the mountainous areas of Uttarakhand.
The Minister further assured that the State Government will establish a veterinary college in the area and that work would soon start on the establishment of an engineering college announced by the Chief Minister in the past.
Rawat also announced that the financial assistance provided by the Government for the Gauchar Mela will be increased from Rsfive lakh to Rs10 lakh. “In view of the public sentiment, the Government will get a survey conducted on the possibility of establishing a medical college in Chamoli district. The Government will soon start work on facilitating regular flights from the Gauchar airstrip,” the Minister said.
In his address, Rawat also mentioned the work of completing the construction of the primary health centre at Gauchar, construction of a stadium, construction of a polytechnic building, efforts needed to redress the problem of irregular potable water supply and the demand for a Press club and library.
