Dehra Dun, 24 Sept 2006

In a bid to place Uttaranchal on the tourist map of the world by increasing connectivity, the Centre would upgrade Dehra Dun and Pantnagar airports and provide helicopter services to top religious destinations in the state.

The Centre will spend Rs 150 crore to upgrade these two airports, the work for which is being undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, who was in Dehra Dun recently told state government officials.

The upgradation work of these two airports would be completed by 2007.

The Jollygrant airport at Dehra Dun is being upgraded by AAI for operation of B-737/A-320 class of aircraft considering the traffic potential and requirement projected by airlines for this purpose.

Night landing facility would also be provided at Jollygrant airport, Patel said.

Pantnagar airport is also being upgraded for Boeing and airbus operations. Already, Deccan Airways has started 45-seater service to both Pantnagar and Dehra Dun from New Delhi.

In addition to this, Deccan Airways is also contemplating a move to link Dehra Dun with Pantnagar, an industrial hub in Kumaon region.
