DEHRA DUN: Uttarakhand government has appointed an IAS officer and former chief secretary Subhash Kumar as new vice chancellor of prestigious G B Pant Agriculture University, a move which came under fire from the main opposition BJP.
The government issued the order yesterday appointing Kumar as the new VC in place of B S Bisht who is going back to his parent department of the Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR) after completing his tenure, official sources said.
Kumar is currently holding the charge of chairman of state-run power generating corporation Uttarakhand Jal Vidyyt Nigam Ltd.
An IAS officer of 1977 batch, Kumar would remain in the post of the VC for six months or till the appointment of a regular VC, the sources said.
Kumar was removed by the Congress government as Chief Secretary soon after Vijay Bahuguna became Chief Minister on March 13.
BJP criticised the government for allegedly “downgrading” the post of the VC as well as chief secretary. “A person (Kumar) who held the top bureacratic post has now been made VC of a specialized institute. We don’t know what agriculture knowlege Kumar possess as far as agriculture field is concerned. Moreover, Kumar will work under the Agriculture Secretary who has a larger say in the affairs of the state-run institute,” Bhatt said.
