Gwal Devta Temple is dedicated to Golu Devta (also known as Goril or Goral devta) who is considered the most revered local deity in the Kumaon region. Golu Devta is revered by the devotees as the God of Justice. The temple is located in the Champawat town in the name sake district of Uttarakhand. Large numbers of devotees visit the temple to seek the deity’s blessing in their life.
According to the popular folklore, Golu Devta was the prince of a Katyuri king. On a hunting expedition the king fell in love with a young and beautiful woman and married her. Upon seeing the undivided attention the king gave to the new queen, the other queens got jealous. When the queen was expecting his first child, the queens conspired to kill the child at the birth. After several failed attempts, they drowned the child into the river. However, he miraculously came out unharmed and was adopted by a poor fisherman family. The child grew to be an honest and a just young man. Upon seeing the ill-attempts of her step mothers, he returned to the kingdom and told the truth, the king convicted the queens and installed Golu as his heir. The kingdom under Golu was just and fair. Hence, Golu Devta is revered as the God of Justice.
