Veni Nag temple is the most famous temple dedicated to one the many incarnations of Lord Vishnu. In addition to these temples, the hill station of Berinag also offers unprecedented view of the snow capped peaks of the Greater Himalayas. According to famous folklores, it is believed that Lord Krishna, after defeating Kaliya Nag who ruled the Yamuna river, advised him to leave the river and settle somewhere in the Himalayas. He obliged and travelled to Berinag with his disciples and lived there ever since. It is also believed that the place got its name after the Nagveni dynasty king Benimadhava, who ruled the region.Under the reign of Chand dynasty, Berinag was one of the main worship centers in the kingdom and has a rich culture and religious heritage which can be seen in the form of numerous temples dotting the region.
