In 1919, when Narendra Shah, the King of Tehri Garhwal moved his capital from Tehri to a more idyllic destination, the town of Narendra Nagar came into existence. In the early 1900s, the town became popular amongst the British Viceroys of that time. To offer a nostalgic stay to the Viceroys and his entourage visiting Narendra Nagar, The Palace ‘Anneze’ was specially designed in the original palace building in 1910.
The royal palace has been frequented by several distinguished personalities of the past such as the former Prime Ministers of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi along with the last British Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten of Burma.
In 1914, the reigns of Tehri Garhwal slipped from the hands of King Narendra Shah to the last Maharaja, Manabendra Shah. When India attained Independence, the Tehri Garhwal province was merged with Uttar Pradesh state (now in Uttarakhand state). At present, the Narendra Palace of Narendra Nagar is home to the renowned five-star hotel “Ananda-In the Himalayas”.
