The sacred Uma Devi Temple in Karnaprayag is dedicated to Goddess Parvati or Gauri, the daughter of the Himalayas. It is here that her ‘Swayambhu’ or self- manifested idol has been consecrated since ages. This pious Hindu shrine is located near the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar River, making the aura spiritually awakening.
Uma Devi temple is hailed as the second most revered Hindu shrine in Karnaprayag and is admired and worshipped as a Shaktipeeth. People belonging to different sects and walk of life garner their faith in the deity and visit this temple often.
The locals believe that Uma Devi appeared in front of a Dimri Pundit and asked him to build a temple for her, at the holy confluence of Pindar and Alaknanda River.
Once in every twelve years, the Uma Devi Temple hosts a grand procession in which the idol of Goddess Uma is carried to Dimmer village, her maternal home. Many villagers take part in this procession which is taken out with great pomp and show.
The Uma Devi Temple came into existence in the early years of the 20th century. It is considered to be the home of Goddess Uma and has great religious importance in the life of the locals.
