Tanakpur

Tanakpur falls under the Champawat district of Uttarakhand in the Tarai-Bhabhar region of Kumaon. It is among the few places in Uttarakhand having Rail Connectivity to Bareilly. Tanakpur lies on the riverside of river Sharda. NHPC has set up a Hydro Power Station on Sharda river at Tanakpur. The Tanakpur Power Plant is the first major operational run-of-the-river 120 MW Power Station  located 5 km down stream of Brahmadeo in the Sharda Valley. Tanakpur Power Station  is the first hydel project commissioned by the NHPC in the year 1992-93 in the Sharda Valley. Power from this project is now is being supplied to neighbouring country Nepal. This marks the beginning of harnessing the hydro power potential of Sarda River Basin.

Tankapur is well connected with road to different parts of Kumaon as well as other parts of the Uttaranchal and other states. Regular bus service ply from Tanakpur to Delhi, Nainital, Haldwani, Bareilly etc.

As per the 2001census, Tanakpur had a population of 15,810. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Tanakpur has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 71%, and female literacy is 58%. In Tanakpur, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Serveral hundred thousand devotees flock to Tanakpur during the Navrataras for the darshan of Purnagiri devi which lies around 21 kms from Tanakpur.
