Uttarakhand has been the centre of education from the ancient time. It is believed that the Kauravas and Pandavas were trained by Guru Dronacharya in the foothills of Himalaya that’s why Dehradun is also known as Drona Nagari. The city of Dehradun has the highest number of centers of higher education in Uttarakhand.  India’s best schools and training institutes are located in Uttarakhand – FRI, IIT Roorkee, IIM Kashipur, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Survey of India, Indian Military Academy, Wildlife Institute of India, L.B.S. National Academy of Administration, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Doon School, Sherwood College, Rashtriya Indian Military College, Nehru Institute of Mountaineering are a few to name.

As per 2013 census, Uttaranchal stands 11th in literacy rate with an overall literacy of 79.63% (Male literacy: 88.33% and Female literacy: 70.70%).

Dehradun has the highest literacy of 85.24% while Udham Singh Nagar has the lowest literacy of 74.44%.

The Uttarakhand state is emerging as an education hub. The city of Dehradun has the highest number of centers of higher education.
