Kumbh Mela is one of the most awaited sacred events of the Hindus. It is a religious fair which is held every four years. Purna Kumbh Mela which is also a part of the divine event occurs four times every twelve years. The holy event is organized in rotation in four places namely Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. Every sixth year after Purna Kumbh Mela the devotees witness an Ardh Kumbh Mela.
The Ardh Kumbh Mela takes place after six years right after the Maha Kumbh Mela in each of the aforesaid locations by turns. The Kumbh Mela is one of the largest congregation of sages, yogis, ascetics, hermits and devotees. The pilgrims come from different walks of life which makes them united by soul and it becomes a mass gathering. Devotees take refuge in ashrams, camps or tents to become a part of the auspicious event. Ardh Kumbh Mela is the mass hindu pilgrimage of faith where devotees come from far away places for spiritual quest.
In hindi language the word Ardh stands for half and Mela stands for fair. The Ardh Kumbh Mela is called so because it is held after six years and marks the halfway stage between the celebration of the Purna Kumbh Mela every 12 years. Millions of peope visit Haridwar which is considered as The Gateway to God in oder to bathe in the sacred river. The pilgrims have deep faith in the holy water of Ganga as they believe their sins will be washed off by the spiritual power of the holy Ganges. The Ganga Arti is the most enchanting moment which is held on the banks of river Ganga by the priests.
