Nagnath Temple ‘The Oldest Shiva Temple of Champawat’

Nag in English means ‘snake’ and Nath is referred to ‘Lord Shiva’ who has a penchant for snakes and wears it around his neck like a precious jewel. At Nagnath Temple, Shiva is worshipped in his perpetual form of the wielder of the serpentine creatures, signifying his detachment to the world and his inclination towards the outcast creatures.

History of Nagnath Temple

The Nagnath Temple was built by a sage named Guru Gorakhnath. In the 18th century was temple was partially destroyed by the Gurkha and Rohilla invaders but now it is in good state.  

Architecture of the Nagnath temple

The Nagnath temple exhibits the traditional Kumaoni architecture. One can see a double storey wooden structure along with a carved doorway that attracts everybody’s attention.
