Treks in Keylong region

Keylong is located in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh state. This is the district headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti and situated on hills. Keylong is just like Manali but as compared to the natural scenic beauty, Keylong is more beautiful than Manali. Keylong is an important stop and an amazing detour from the Leh-Manali Highway. A green meadow like town smack in the middle of snowcapped peaks, Keylong is predominantly a Buddhist region. Keylong lies on the gateway to Ladakh, so you can witness number of prayer flags waving in the air while ride on the highway.

Keylong offers you some beautiful treks. Trekking in Keylong is one of the best activity to do. The location itself is at a higher altitude and the town is built on valleys. Keylong is difficult to reach during winter and rainy seasons. Helipads are available in most of the villages surrounding Keylong. Nominal charges are set for transportation.

Bara Lacha Pass is an important high mountain pass in the Lahaul Spiti Region. It is situated at an altitude of 4890 m above sea level, It is only done by a experienced trekkers, you need prior high-altitude trekking experience to do this difficult trek in himachal Pradesh. Bara-Lacha La (Pass) is one of best-known tourist places in Keylong. Bara Lacha Pass is an important location as it is located at a point where the valleys of Lahaul and Ladakh meet each other.

Deepak Tal

Deepak Tal is an high altitude glacial lake which is situated at an altitude of 3750 m above sea level. It is fed by glacial melts during the monsoon season and freezes completely in the winters. Deepak Tal is a small little lake located on Manali Leh Highway, at a distance of 20 kilometers from Jispa and 43 kilometers from Keylong. The calm waters of Deepak Tal act as a mirror, reflecting the calm surroundings of snow-capped peaks.

Shashur Monastery

Shashur Monastery is one of the best places to visit in Keylong. It is a short trek in Keylong. The literal meaning of Shashur is “Blue Pines”, it is surrounded by the blue pine trees which share shoulders with each other. This monastery was built in the 17th century, on the spot of a previously existing structure. The then king of Bhutan sent a representative here, who oversaw the building. It is visited by tourists and pilgrims throughout the year but the best time to visit Shashur Monastery is in the month of July.

Kardang Monastery

Kardang Monastery was established in 900 years ago in the the foothills of the Himalaya. It is situated at an altitude of 3500 m above sea level. The monastery is historical because it is a part of Kardang village which was once the capital of Lahaul. A white facade decorated with prayer flags in their traditional colors is what greets the visitors as they arrive at this beautiful monastery. In the monastery, you will find thankas, musical instruments such as flutes, drums, horns, as well as old weapons, colorful frescoes and a number of wall murals.
