About Dwarahat
Dwarahat literally suggests the ‘Way to Heaven’ in the local language. It is famous for the ancient temples constructed by the Katyuri kings. The architecture of these temples is similar to that of the Gurjari School of Art. Dwarahat is also a popular center of education in Kumaon as there are an engineering college and a polytechnic institute at Dwarahat apart from several schools.
Dwarahat proudly exhibits a group of 55 distinguished ancient temples. One can savor some refreshing views of the winsome Himalayas bathed by the hues of the sun. The best time to visit this place is between the months of February-April and September-October.
- Village Tourism: This beautiful Kumaoni town is known for 52 exquisitely carved temples dating back to the 11th century. Apart from that, one can explore the vicinity that can teach a lot about the culture and customs prevailing in the region. The hilly folks are warm and welcoming and would be happy to share their folklores and stories.
- Nature Walks: Dwarahat is known for its lush greenery and undulating grassy hills that surround this quaint hilly town. Several walking trails in and around Dwarahat could be explored with friends and family.
Fairs and Festivals in Dwarahat
Festivity is also a part of the culture of Dwarahat as the auspicious Hindu festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Basant Panchami, Harela, Bhaitauli, Olgia (Ghee Sankranti), Khatarua, Bat Savitri and Ganga Dussehra are celebrated with great joy. A couple of fairs are also held at Dwarahat. These are Doonagiri Mela about 52kms from Ranikhet and Syalde Bikhauti Mela which is celebrated on Vishuwat Sankranti day.
How to reach Dwarahat
Dwarahat is a town and Nagar Panchayat snuggled in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. It is located at a distance of 37 km from Ranikhet. Dwarahat is situated in the midst of Ranikhet and Gairsain, at the intersection of Ranikhet-Kausani road and Almora-Badrinath road.
By Air: The nearest airport for Dwarahat is Pantnagar. Pantnagar Airport is situated 112kms from Dwarahat. Taxis are available to Dwarahat from Pant Nagar Airport.
By Rail: Kathgodam is the nearest railway station to Dwarahat, situated at a distance of 88kms. It is well connected by the Railway networks with major destinations of India like Lucknow, Delhi, and Kolkata. Trains are frequent to Kathgodam as it is the gateway of the Kumaon region and buses and Taxis are easily available from the station to Dwarahat.
By Road: Dwarahat is well connected by motorable roads with major cities of Uttarakhand state and northern India. It is well connected with major destinations of Garhwal and Kumaon region as it is situated on National Highway 87 which connects the Kumaon region with Garhwal. Buses to Kathgodam, Nainital, and Almora can be taken from ISBT Anand Vihar, Delhi.
