The subject of History was introduced in 1962 at the under graduate level at Birla Govt. College. The Department of Ancient India History Culture and Archaeology was introduced in HNB Garhwal University in 1976. Since than, the Department has developed as a centre of teaching and research in the different areas of History and Archaeology particularly focusing on Uttarakhand Archaeology.The Department right from its inception has carried out an extensive research on and also archaeological exploration and excavation programme in the Central Himalayan region.
In 1987 the Department was selected for participation in the Departmental Research Support (DRS) programme of the UGC. In 1993 it was elevated into Department under Special Assistance Programme(SAP).
