Bilaspur, a charming hill station  nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, is best known for the Bhakra Dam and the beautiful Gobind Sagar Lak, a man-made reservoir that is one of the most  popular places to visit here.   • SHRI NAINA DEVI JI: Shri Naina Devi Ji Temple is one of  Himachal Pradesh's most prominent places of worship, dedicated to Goddess Sati,  an incarnation of Goddess Durga. The temple is in the district of Bilaspur and  is one of the 51 Shakti peethas, where Sati's eyes fell after Lord Vishnu cut  her body into 51 pieces to save the Earth from Shiva's wrath.

    A large number of  pilgrims and devotees from all over the country visit this holy site to seek  Maa Durga's blessings. The temple attracts a large crowd, particularly during  Shravan Ashtami and the Navratras of Chaitra and Ashwin.

  • GOBIND SAGAR LAKE: Gobind Sagar Lake is a man-made  reservoir built in 1976; its source is the Bhakra hydroelectric dam. One of the  world's highest gravity dams, the Bhakra dam is perched at an elevation of  225.5 m above its lowest foundations. Its reservoir, Gobind Sagar, is 90 kilometers  long and covers an area of approximately 170 square kilometers.

    On November 20,  1963, late Pt. Jwahar Lal Nehru dedicated the dam to the nation. The beautiful  Gobing Sagar Lake is well-known for sightseeing, adventure activities,  recreational fun, and so on. Nature lovers and thrill seekers will enjoy the  lake.

  • LAXMI NARAYAN MANDIR: The famous Laxmi Narayan Temple of  Bilaspur is located near the bus stand in the Himachal Pradesh district of  Bilaspur. The presiding deity here is Lord Vishnu with his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, and it is built in the Shikhar Shaily style of architecture.

    Other  deities in the temple include Lord Shiva, Rangnath, Maa Durga, and Baba  Bangali. Many tourists, pilgrims, and devotees visit this temple to seek Lord  Vishnu's and Goddess Lakshmi's blessings and to enjoy the scenic beauty of  Bilaspur.

  • KANDROUR BRIDGE: The Kandrour Bridge, which was  built in 1965, connects the districts of Bilaspur and Hamirpur. This stunning  bridge, which spans the Sutlej River and is one of the highest in the world, is  well worth a visit. It is located on National Highway 88, 8 kilometers from  Bilaspur.

  • KOLDAM DAM: The NTPC Limited's Koldam Dam  Hydropower Project, also known as Koldam, is another tourist attraction in  Bilaspur that attracts visitors from all over the country. The Koldam Dam was  planned to begin construction in 2000, and the first brick was laid that year  by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but proper construction began in 2004 and it is  currently under construction on the Sutlej River along National Highway 21.

  • BHAKRA DAM: The world's highest straight  gravity dam, the Bhakra Dam, is located on the border of the North Indian states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The view of this vast dam and the  surrounding jungles is absolutely breathtaking, and many tourists visit this amazing  place to see this engineering marvel.

    The Bhakra Dam was built four decades ago  in Bilaspur's Bhakra village, about 13 kilometers upstream from Nangal Township.  Every year, more than 2 to 3 lakh visitors from all over the world visit the  dam.

  • MARKANDEYA: The picturesque surroundings of Markandeya  should be seen during a visit to Bilaspur. The beautiful Markandeya Ji Temple,  which is located here, is very important, particularly among childless couples, and is named after the famous sage Rishi Markandeya, who lived and meditated  here.

    The temple is located 20 kilometers from Bilaspur and can be reached by  private car or bus. Markandeya Ji is revered as the savior of children in this  temple, and couples pray to him for the long life of their children.

  • VYAS CAVE: Vyas Cave is another well-known  destination in Bilaspur that is of great historical significance and draws visitors from all over the country. This cave is located at the foot of the  city and is famous for the revered sage Vyasa, who spent several years  meditating in it.

    Saint Vyas wrote the epic Mahabharat and the name Bilaspur  can be traced back to Rishi Vyas, who was originally known as Vyaspur.

  • FORT BAHADURPUR: This impressive fort is located  near Tepra village in Bilaspur on the top of a hill known as Bahadurpur, which  is 1,980 meters above sea level. During a time of war, Raja Keshab Sein built  the Bahadurpur fort to serve as a defense against enemies.

    The fort is located  on the highest point in the district of Bilaspur and is surrounded by beautiful deodar and banyan trees. Tourists enjoy visiting this location, especially  during the winter months, when it is surrounded by lush green valleys and  receives occasional snowfall.

Bandla hills  are also a popular paragliding destination.

  • Water sport & fishing: Water Skiing, Sailing, Kayaking,  Regattas, Motor Boat Racing, and other water sports are available at Gobind  Sagar Lake. The motor boats are available for a small fee.

    Netting and fishing  are also popular and recommended activities at the lake, which is home to a  diverse range of fish species such as Labeo Dero and Pirata. The Water Sports Training Center in the upper Nihal area is also worth a visit.

Bilaspur was the capital of the  same-named state, also known as Kahlur, which was founded in the 7th century. Chandel Rajputs were the ruling dynasty, descended from the rulers of Chanderi  in modern-day Madhya Pradesh. Bilaspur was established in 1663.

The state later  became a princely state of British India, reporting to the British province of  Punjab.

Bilaspur became a separate state of  India under a chief commissioner, and by an act of the Indian Parliament on 1 July 1954, Bilaspur State was made a district of Himachal Pradesh state.

The  historic town of Bilaspur was submerged when the Sutlej River was dammed to  create the Govind Sagar, and a new town was built upslope of the old.
