Roopkund Lake is a high altitude lake, which is situated at the height of 5029 mts at Junargali, in the lap of the Himalayan peaks Nanda Ghunti (6310 mts) & Trishul (7120 mts). Also known as Skeleton Lake, it is famous for centuries-old human skeletons, which lay in and around the lake. These skeletons can be seen when the ice dissolves during the summer.

Roopkund is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The Roopkund trail is a moderate to a difficult type of trek that takes us through the forests, waterfalls and high-altitude meadows of Bedni and Auli Bugyal. A panoramic view of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks can be seen from the region.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Kathgodam to Lohajung

We will receive you early morning from Kathgodam Railway Station. In the morning, we start our journey from Kathgodam / Rishikesh to Lohajung (7700 ft), you can enjoy the various hill stations of the kumaon region as well on the routes, you will also see glimpse of Uttarakhand as you pass through hills, villages, rivers and hairpin bends.

Travel distance is 226 kms from Kathgodam, 263 kms from Rishikesh and 288 km from Haridwar, which takes 9-10 hours to reach Lohajung. Night stay will be in a guesthouse in Lohajung.

Day 2
Lohargunj to Didna Village

Get ready for the trek, amazing views of Pindar valley and majestic Nanda Ghunti peak awaits us. 

On the second day, we depart to Didina village via a motorable road and cover 7 kms. Then, the trek starts from Kuling, a small cultural village with scenic beauty. First, 2.5 kms will be a descent down to Neel Ganga. 

After crossing Neel Ganga, there will be a 3 kms ascent and it will  take approximately 4-5 hours to reach Didina village. Overnight accommodation  will be at the home stay or in the camps.

Day 3
Didna Village to Ali Bugyal

On the third day of our journey, after breakfast at Didina village, we start our trekking towards Ali Bugyal, which will take approximately 2 hours, and the trail passes through the thick forest where one can hear the chirping of birds and witness various kinds of high altitude flora and fauna. 

Lunch will be in Ali meadow, which provides an incredible view of the surrounding valley. Overnight stay will be in tents at Ali Bugyal.

Day 4
Ali Bugyal to Patar Nachauni via Bedni Bugyal and Ghora Lotani

Wake up to the mesmerizing view of Ali Bugyal, Trek to Bedni Bugyal is slightly ascended but not difficult. A trek of 1.5 to 2 hours will take us to Bedni Bugyal. Bedni Bugyal. and explore the vicinity. Bedni Kund and the view of Patti Ka Danda cannot be missed. 

According to the Hindu mythology, the four Vedas were written at Bedni Bugyal. After breakfast, we depart to Pattar nachaniya, which is just 5 km from here that takes 2-3 hours to reach. ‘Pattar’ means ‘stone’ and ‘Nachaniya’ means a dancer. It is believed that these dancers were turned to stone by the curse of goddess Nanda. 

At Patter nachaniya, one can experience the 360-degree sublime view full of charms like Nanda Ghunti and Trishul peaks, waterfalls and ponds between meadows. Overnight stay will be in tents.

Day 5
Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa via Kalu Vinayak

Today trek start towards Baguwabasa, 6 km from Patter nachaniya (4-5 hours) Patter means Stone & Nauchniya means dancer, believed that dancers converted into stone because of curse of Goddess Nanda. 

After breakfast we climb to Kailawa Vinayak top, tough ascend about 3.5 km. from Kalwa Vinayak view is unique Himalayan range peaks, Rivers, Water falls. After having lunch trek will start to Bhagwabasa (2 km). Overnight stay will be in tents at Bhagwabasa.

Day 6
Bhagwabasa to Roopkund to Patar Nachauni

Early morning hot tea & start trek to Roopkund, Breakfast on the way because early morning view is clear, later clouds cover the mountains. Trek is quiet difficult today ascend 3.5km upto Roopkund & 400 meter Junargali Dhar(5029 meter). Roopkund is a small lake in glacier, Human skeleton is there many years old, some skeleton flesh can be found which lies under snow. From Junargali close view of Trishuli & Nanda Ghughuti & Shila Samudra.

Junargali is the last point of this trek, Return back to Patanachaniya via Bhakuwabasa & Kailwa Vinayak, halt for overnight.

Day 7
Patar Nachauni to Wan Village via Bedni

Enjoy morning sunrise view hot Breakfast & start moving towards Wan Village via Bedni Bugyal. Today from Bedni bugyal another route to Wan Village, passes through dense forest, Giant trees, Flora & Fauna, Neel Ganga & a cultural village wan, people of this village is very hard worker. 

There is Latu Devata main Temple, every year villager organize worship. Overnight stay will be in tents in Wan village. 

Day 8
Wan Village to Kathgodam

Today is the last day of this trek, Depart to kathgodam (246 km) from Wan Village, Lunch & Breakfast on the way. After crossing Gwaldam of the Kumaon region starts on the way famous places Baijnath, Almora, Kausani can be seen. 

Note: On Day 8, you’ll reach Kathgodam by 6:00 pm. You can book your travel any time after 7:00 pm.
