Nanakmatta is an important Sikh pilgrim centre which lies on the Rudrapur-Tanakpur route. It is believed that Guru Nanak, the first Sikh Guru visited this place to mediate. Thousands of pilgrims come here throughout the year. The town also got popular with the huge Nanakmatta Dam built across river Saryu. The nearby area of Nanakmatta Dam is a perfect spot for angling and picnicking. Nanakmatta was previously known as Gorakhmatta. Its name was changed to Nanakmatta when Guru Nanak Dev visited this place in the 16th century. Nanakmatta was previously the abode of yogis who were devotees of Guru Gorakhnath. It is situated 17kms from Khatima. Nanakmatta is situated in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand state which was previously known as Uttaranchal. Guru Nanak Dev ji performed several magical acts at this place for the development of this region. Guru Nanak Dev Ji meditated at Nanakmatta for a lot of time as he was in love with the serenity and placidity of this place. There are many gurudwaras in Nanakmatta having a story of its own in association with Guruji.
