The Kedartal is fed by snowy mountain ridges of Thalay Sagar (6,904 m), Bhrigupanth (6,772 m) and other surrounding peaks. Kedar Ganga river, which according to Hindu mythology is considered to be Shiva’s contribution to Bhagirathi (a source-stream of Ganges) is the major source of this lake. The surface elevation of this river is 5,000 metres above sea level. The best season to visit Kedatal is mid May-June and between mid August-October.

Kedartal located at a distance of 17 km from Gangotri is a popular trekking destination. Hikers hailing from different parts of the country come to bond with the gorgeous Himalayan vistas around the lake. Amidst the trek, one has a fair chance of spotting Bharal (blue sheep), goral, Himalayan black bear and varied Himalayan birds that are found in this region.

Location & How to Reach Kedartal Lake

The travelers can commence their journey from Delhi and reach Gangotri by bus. From Gangotri the route involves arduous terrains and climbing along the narrow Kedar Ganga gorge en route to Bhokharak about 8 km away. The hikers can camp along Kedarkharak about 4 km away, and then a further 5 km will lead to Kedartal.
