Note: Lake side camping in Deoriatal is banned by High Court, few years ago. Now camping is done after 100 mts from the Lake. Camping in meadow region is strictly prohibited.

Camping at Deoriatal (Devariyatal) offers lake-side views of Chaukhamba peaks, easy access from Sari village, and a classic Himalayan camping experience that works for beginners as well as seasoned trekkers.

Deoriatal is a high altitude freshwater lake at about 2,400 m, reached by a short trek from Sari village in the Chopta–Ukhimath region of Uttarakhand. The calm lake reflects the Chaukhamba massif on clear days, making it one of the most photogenic camping spots in Garhwal

Camping in Deoriatal

A small and easy 3 km trek from Sari village (located on Chopta-Ukhimath road) will take you to the enchanted Deoriyatal. One has to take permission from the forest officials at the lake for an overnight stay at camps. Visitors can bring their own tents or rent according to their needs.

Camping Experience at Deoriatal

Camping at Deoriatal is all about quiet lake side meadows, reflections of snow peaks, and clear night skies away from town lights.

Campsites: Operators pitch tents on designated ares near the lake, following forest and eco-regulations.

Atmosphere: Evenings around the bonfire, sunrise over Chaukhamba, and early?morning reflections are the main highlights for most visitors.

Duration: Most trips are 1–2 nights at Deoriatal, often combined with Chopta–Tungnath–Chandrashila treks.

Region: Ukhimath–Chopta, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand.

Altitude: Around 2,400 m; Sari village base at about 2,000 m.

Trek distance: Approx. 2.5–3 km one way from Sari, graded easy.

Why Camping at Deoria Tal Lake?

Apart from the majestic Chaukhamba peak, visitors can also spot other famous peaks such as Nilkantha, Bandarpunch, Kedar Range, Kalanag, etc. from the vantage of Deoriyatal. Trekkers can find few dhabas and cafes a few meters before the lake, however, there are no lodging facilities apart from the tents. 

Since the lake is situated in the Kedarnath Wildlife sanctuary, one can also spot small animals early morning if they are lucky. It comes as no surprise that Deoriyatal is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uttarakhand.

Deoriatal is an exotic yet incredible location in the Himalayas. It is a jade green lake that is perched at an elevation of 2438mts above the sea level. Devariyatal is the reflection of the lofty peaks of the mighty Himalayas, this reflection is of the Chaukhamba peak is sighted early in the morning in the crystal clear water of the Lake.

Types of Camps and Facilities in Deoriatal

Different operators offer varying comfort levels, from basic trekking tents to semi luxury lakeside setups.

Accommodation:
 Dome or alpine tents (2-3 sharing) with sleeping bags and mats.
 Some packages combine tents at Deoriatal with Swiss tents/rooms at Sari or Chopta on other nights.

Common facilities:
 Forest/portable toilets or pit toilets, separate for men and women.
Dining tents or open dining areas; simple charging options sometimes available at base village but not guaranteed at the lake.

Meals: Veg meals usually included: evening tea with snacks, dinner, breakfast, and packed lunch on trek days.

In winters, because of its magnificent height, it receives a very good amount of snowfall. White ground and lakeside make this area a wonderland to do camping.

Summers is a pleasant season at Devariyatal, the temperatures does not rises high because of its altitude. Wake up in the sharp morning to witness a beautiful dawn with a clear view of snow capped Himalayas.

Location and How to Reach

Deoriatal camping is usually approached via Sari village, which acts as the base point for the trek. Check how to reach Sari village.

By road: Buses/shared Sumos available to Ukhimath from Dehradun, Rishikesh and Haridwar, then about 12 km drive to Sari. From Delhi, the common route is Delhi-Haridwar-Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar-Rudraprayag-Kund-Ukhimath-Sari.

Nearest airport: Jolly Grant (Dehradun), roughly 210-220 km from Sari; onward journey by taxi or bus takes 7-9 hours via Rishikesh and Rudraprayag.

By trek: From Sari, a stone-paved trail climbs steadily through oak and rhododendron forest for 1.5-2 hours to reach the Deoriatal meadow and lake.

Safety, Permits and Responsible Camping

Because Deoriatal lies within a forested, eco-sensitive zone, there are regulations aimed at protecting the lake and meadows.
 
 Permissions: Forest entry and camping fees are generally arranged by your trekking operator; independent campers should check latest rules at Sari/Ukhimath before pitching tents.
 
 Safety: Reputable operators carry first-aid kits, basic oxygen support on multiday treks and experienced guides familiar with the route and weather patterns.
 
 Responsible travel: Littering, loud music, and washing directly in the lake are discouraged; trekkers are expected to follow "leave no trace" principles.
