The Uttarakhand government will soon roll out a ‘Snow Leopard Tour’ to promote winter tourism in the state, Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Singh Garbyal said.

The initiative, inspired by the Ladakh model, will open select high Himalayan regions such as Gangotri to tourists during winter in a controlled manner. The programme will be launched on a pilot basis with a snow leopard sighting project in Gangotri National Park, located in Uttarkashi.

Gangotri National Park, located in Uttarkashi and bordering China, has been closed for the winter season. The park received 29,162 tourists this year, generating a revenue of ?80.96 lakh.

Forest officials have installed camera traps to monitor wildlife, including around 35 snow leopards, during the winter closure. The park is scheduled to reopen on April 1. Check snow leopard tours in Uttarakhand.

With the opening of the gates of Gangotri Dham, tourists will start getting permission to go to Gaumukh trek. 

Range officer Pradeep Bisht said that last Friday a team from Kankhu barrier went for a recce of the Gomukh trek. He said that the 18 kms route has been made completely smooth. He said that after the permission of the administration, tourists will be allowed to go from April 30.

The gates of Gangotri National Park officially opened for visitors on April 1, marking the start of the new tourist season. Following the park's reopening, tourists have once again been granted permission to visit two of its most popular attractions — Gartang Gali and Nelong Valley.

Gartang Gali, known for its historic wooden bridge carved into a steep cliff, and the remote Nelong Valley, often referred to as the "Ladakh of Uttarakhand," draw adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. With the reopening, authorities have implemented safety measures and visitor guidelines to ensure a smooth and secure experience for tourists.

Gangotri National Park will reopen for tourists from April 1, 2023, with the park administration reviewing arrangements for the popular Gangotri–Gaumukh trek.

The park, known for high Himalayan treks such as Gangotri–Kalindi–Badrinath and the Indo-China border area of Nelang, continues to attract visitors for its glaciers, icefields, and iconic sites like Gaumukh, the origin of the Ganga, and Tapovan.
