Kafni Glacier is situated in the district of Bageshwar Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state. It is the main source of Kafni River and Pindar river's tributary which later joins the Ganges. Kafni glacier is situated on the left side of Pindar Valley, beneath the famous peak of Nandkot and to the southeast of Nanda Devi Peak. 

Kafni is a small glacier but it is very well-liked by the trekkers and adventure lovers. It is compared with Pindar, the valley here is broader. you will come across the multi-colored high altitude flowers like that of Rhododendrons, which will make our journey an unforgettable experience on this icy paradise.

The Kafni Glacier trek starts from Loharkhet trekkers have to climb up to Dhakuri pass, And from Dhakuri pass you get a view of the magnificent Himalayan peaks including Nanda Khat and Maiktoli. The glacier could be reached from both destinations Almora & Kathgodam depending on the route you have taken. 

Bageshwar becomes the common starting point which is passing by the several villages takes to Khatiya after which the Kafani Glacier is located. About Kafini Glacier

The majestic Kaphini Glacier is located in the district of Bageshwar in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand state. This tranquil Kaphini glacier is situated on the left of Pindar Valley, below Nandakot peak (6,860 m) and southeast of Nanda Devi peak. 

This glacier is perched at an altitude of 3,853 metres above sea level. This region has an irresistible charm as it is blessed with scenic splendor, which makes it an ideal trekking destination. A wide variety of wild animals, flora and fauna can be seen in this region. One can savour the refreshing views of the snow capped peaks, lush green meadows and flowering boulevards along the trekking trails.

Kafni Glacier Travel Tips

  • Train yourself prior to participating in the trek. You can train by walking, jogging, swimming, and biking.
  • Visit your doctor and let him know about your high-altitude trekking.
  • Let someone in your family or friends know that you are going on this trek and explain to them when you will begin and end the trek. 
  • You shouldn’t hike alone and instead, travel in a group of two or more. 
  • If possible, arrive a day or two before you begin your hike to acclimatize yourself to the high-altitude climate and weather conditions.

Staying in Kafni Glacier

Since Kafni Glacier can be reached only via trekking, there are no accommodations available at higher altitudes. Tents are the only suitable accommodation. Trekkers are required to carry their own sleeping bags and tents which can be erected at any level ground there. 

Kafni Glacier Food Guide

It is impossible to find any eating joint at an elevation of 4,150 mts. Trekkers can take the food supplies with themselves at the start of the trek. Packaged food, as well as vegetables, can be taken with and a cook would be able to prepare the fresh meals for the party. 

Suggested Itinerary for Kafni Glacier Trek

Day 1: Traveling starts from New Delhi to Bageshwar.
Travel to Bageshwar from New Delhi, Dinner & overnight stay in Bageshwar. Bageshwar is situated at the confluence of river Gomati, Saryu, and the Bhagirathi.

Day 2: Bageshwar - Loharkhet
After breakfast, we move to Loharkhet, Loharkhet is a small hamlet on the banks of river Saryu. Dinner & Overnight stay in Loharkhet.

Day 3: Loharkhet - Khati
After breakfast, Trek to Khati village, Khati is the biggest village en-route Pindari. Khati village lies at the confluence of Sundardhunga & Pindari Rivers. The Trek to Khati down to Umla Village (4 kms). Dinner & overnight stay in tents.

Day 4: Khati - Phurkia
On this morning, Trek to Phurkia. Overnight stay in tents at Phurkia.

Day 5: Phurkia - Zero Point - Dwali
On this day, you have to trek 18 kms. From Zero point, you can see the view of Pindari Glacier. The Pindari Glacier is 3 kms in length & 0.25 kms in breadth. Dinner & Overnight stay in Dwali.

Day 6: Dwali - Kafni - Dwali
On this day you have to trek 24 kms. Kafni glacier lies left of the Pindar valley and the Nandakot. The Himalayan summits are visible from Kafni like Nandakot (6806 M) and Nanda Bhanar (6104 M), After that return to Dwali. Overnight stay & dinner at Dwali.

Day 7: Dwali - Dhakuri
Wake up in the morning and be ready to trek 19 kms trek. Dhakuri-Binjak ridge offers a view of the snow-clad Nandakot summit (6806 mts) to the east of Maktoli (6804 mts) to the west. Overnight stay in Dhakuri.

Day 8: Dhahuri - Bageshwar
After breakfast, A 16 km. trek to Song and 40 km. by bus to Bageshwar. Dinner & Overnight stay in Bageshwar.

Day 9: Bageshwar - New Delhi
Departure from Bageshwar and travel from Bageshwar to Delhi.

Things to Carry during Kafni Glacier Trek

  • Backpack of 60 ltr -70 ltr. They should come with comfortable shoulder straps, frames, and backpack cover.
  • Waterproof trekking shoes that are high ankle and have a good grip
  • 2 synthetic /waterproof Track Pants, T-shirts - 3 full sleeve
  • 1 Fleece jacket would be ideal; a woolen sweater would be an alternative
  • 1 Windproof jacket, 1 Heavy jacket, Thermal Inners, woolen caps
  • 2 pairs cotton socks, 2 pairs woolen socks, 2 pair waterproof hand gloves
  • Sun Cap, Sun protection cream, Sunglasses Dark with side cover, it should be U/V protected
  • 2 Water bottle- one liter each
  • Lip Balm/ cold cream
  • Toilet kit/ toilet Paper / wipes
  • Quick-dry Towel, Personal Medical Kit
  • Walking Stick Mandatory (At least one)
