Situated in the Pillu village of Rudraprayag district of Garhwal, lies a temple dedicated to a serpent deity Karamjeet Devta. The temple is located near the world renowned Kartik Swami temple, some 30 kms away from district headquarters. The devotees of Karamjeet Devta lift the idol of the deity in a palanquin (doli) - much like goddess Nanda Devi - and carry out the pilgrimage with much devotion and sanctity.
It is believed that due to the grace of the serpent god, no snakes are found in the region. The lord even takes care of his devotees from snake bites. Anyone suffering from a snake bite is taken to this temple where the poison is miraculously drained out of the body of the victim. It is believed than when someone sees a snake in the region, it means the serpent lord has not been offered prayers and gratuity in years.
