Regarded as one of the finest mountaineering institutes in India, the prestigious Nehru Institute of Mountaineering was established in the cold winter of November, 1965 at Uttarkashi. NIM was founded to honor Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru's great desire of bringing younger generation closer to the mountains and instill a sense of adventure and compassion for the environment.
Over the decades, NIM has trained thousands of mountaineers, adventure enthusiasts, defence personnel and instructors from India and abroad. The institute is also recognised for its expertise in mountain search and rescue, disaster response and outdoor leadership training.
Nehru Institute of Mountaineering offers professional training programmes in mountaineering, adventure sports, rescue operations and outdoor leadership. The institute conducts courses for beginners as well as experienced climbers.
This introductory programme is designed for students, teachers and outdoor enthusiasts who wish to learn the basics of camping, trekking, navigation, teamwork and wilderness survival.

The Basic Mountaineering Course introduces participants to rock climbing, snow craft, ice craft, rope techniques, glacier travel, camping and mountain safety. It serves as the foundation for higher mountaineering training.
The Advanced Mountaineering Course is intended for trainees who have successfully completed the Basic Mountaineering Course with the required grading. It focuses on advanced climbing techniques, expedition planning and leadership in mountain environments.
This specialised programme trains participants in mountain rescue techniques, casualty evacuation, rope rescue systems, glacier rescue and emergency response in difficult terrain.
The Method of Instruction course prepares experienced mountaineers to become instructors by developing teaching skills, leadership qualities and technical expertise required for conducting mountaineering courses.
NIM also conducts customised adventure and mountaineering programmes for defence organisations, police forces, educational institutions, government departments and other groups based on specific training requirements.
