The main purpose of Constructing this airport is to cater to the needs of tourist and pilgrim traffic to the region (mainly during Char Dham Yatra), but lay unused as air charter companies did not start operations to the area. The Indian Air Force also uses the airstrip as an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG).
