Swargarohini ‘The Way to Heaven’

The Swargarohini massif consists of four peaks among which Swargarohini I is the main peak. While it is not particularly high according to the Himalayan standards and is not the highest in the Bandarpunch range but is notable for its vivid topography, consisting of two peaks namely the eastern summit and the western summit.

Mythological tale related to Swargarohini Peak

According to Hindu scriptures, the mighty Pandavas traversed through Swargarohini to reach heaven. However, only one Pandava brother i.e. Yudhishthira accompanied by a dog was able to make their ascent to heaven. Many Hindus believe that Swargarohini is the only way by which one can reach heaven in his human form.

Climbing History of Swargarohini Peak

After several failed attempts, Swargarohini was finally conquered on October 25, 1974, by Charles Clarke (England), Disher Singh Virk, Peter Fuhrman and Bruce MacKinnon (Canada) accompanied by Mohan Singh and Rattan Singh from India who made their first ascent to the west summit of Swargarohini I.

This empyrean peak is perched at an impressive altitude of 6,252 metres and finds its mention in the epic Mahabharata. The ideal time to trek to Swargarohini is from May to October. The route to Swargarohini follows the Badrinath-Mana-Lakshmiban-Chakratirth-SatopanthTal-Swargarohini Base Camp. The rewarding Swargarohini trek starts from Mana Village near Badrinath in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
