The lake is in proximity to Mayali Pass, a strenuous trek crossing the Khatling Glacier. The best time to visit this lake is in from May-June and September-October. The trek route to Painya Tal starts from Gaurikund, crossing Kedarnath valley, then Vasuki Tal, which further leads to Painya Tal.
The arduous trek route to Painya Tal requires climbing on the steep cliffs. The trek is exhausting both mentally and physically until one reaches the lake, which charges the senses with its sheer beauty. Those who hike uphill often complain about the lack of oxygen which makes it slightly difficult to breathe. However, the trek requires walking for a short distance which makes it easily accessible.
Painya Tal is located at a distance of 26 km from road-head. The nearest railhead is at Rishikesh about 212 km away from Gaurikund.
