Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun
Jolly Grant Airport (IATA: DED, ICAO: VIDN), also known as Dehradun Airport, is an airport serving Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the only operational airport plying daily commercial flights, connecting the Garhwal region by Air. The airport is located about 25 km east of Dehradun city. Nestled in the foothills of Himalayas, the airport, after extension of runway to accommodate larger aircraft, has started commercial operations from 30th March 2008. The airport being located close to the holy city of Rishikesh, the gateway to the Himalayas, would enable tourists to fly in instead of travelling by rail or road. Tourists from all over the world flock to Rishikesh and improved connectivity would result in more tourist inflows which would attract more airlines to start operations. It takes about 20 minutes drive through the picturesque terrain to get to the town of Rishikesh and around 45 minutes to Dehradun city. Efforts are being made to rope in more airlines to start operations, particularly budget airlines, which would be a shot in the arm for the tourism sector. The Airports Authority of India has expanded the runway at the airport. Earlier this airport could only handle small aircraft while now it can handle the movements of Airbus A320s, Boeing 737s and other aircraft in their category. This will get more airlines flying in.
