Kedarnath Ropeway
The Government of Uttarakhand plans to build the longest ropeway in the world at an altitude of 11,500 feet above sea level to connect the Kedarnath Dham. The 11.5 km long ropeway will significantly reduce the time taken by pilgrims to reach Kedarnath shrine from Sonprayag/Gaurikund.
Note: The Kedarnath Rope-way is still under development phase. We will update when it is functional for tourists and pilgrims.

Kedarnath Ropeway Project Highlights
- Longest ropeway in the world at an altitude of 11,500 feet above sea level
- It will take just 60 minutes (1 hour) to reach Kedarnath from Sonprayag
- It will be 13 kms from Sonprayag to Kedarnath
- Estimated cost of the project will be over Rs 1200 crore.
Current Situation to reach Kedarnath
At present, the pilgrims have to trek 16 kms from Gaurikund to the shrine, which takes the whole day, while the ropeway will enable them to travel from Sonprayag to Kedarnath in just 60 minutes.
Other option to reach Kedarnath is by Helicopter or horses/mules and palkies to kedarnath. All these modes are quite expensive for budget and middle class tourist or pilgrim. The ropeway in Kedarnath will not only save time but it will be budget friendly as well.

16 October 2022: National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has given its nod to the development of a ropeway project between Sonprayag to Kedarnath shrine in Rudraprayag district.
28 June 2022: Uttarakhand’s tourism minister Satpal Maharaj announced that the work on the Sonprayag to Kedarnath Ropeway will start soon at Uttarakhand Tourism Board Council meeting.
21 June 2022: Uttarakhand Wildlife Board Gives Nod for Ropeways to Kedarnath Shrine. The meeting was chaired by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami.
16 May 2022: Land Acquisition Begins For World’s Longest Ropeway To Connect Kedarnath
7 Jan 2022: The NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) invited bids for the ropeway project connecting Sonprayag to Kedarnath Dham via Gaurikund in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district. The last date for submission of online-only bids for the project will be 10 March 2022
5 Nov, 2021: During his visit to Kedarnath on November 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said work on ropeways to Kedarnath and Shri Hemkund Sahib would start soon.
