Tucked away in the midst of the gorgeous Garhwal Himalayas, the Sahastra Tal is located on the western end of the snow-clad Khatling glacier. The Sahastra Tal gets its unique name from the numerous lakes that are found in this region. The pristine lake lies on the border of Uttarkashi and Tehri district of Garhwal and is situated a few km away from the quaint hamlet of Kalyani. Perched at an impressive altitude of 1530 meters, the Sahastra Tal is one of the largest lakes in the Garhwal division of Himalayas. The lake is located on either side of the glacier which acts as the source of river Bhilangna. Bal Ganga River, a tributary of river Ganga flows nearby this lake.

Sahastra Tal is also a popular trek among the adventure enthusiasts. Hiking through the dense woods, pristine hamlets, the valley of flowers and rippling streams makes it a perfect trekking route. The trekkers can also relish the soul-stirring views of the majestic Himalayan peaks and glaciers. The best time to visit this lake is between June to September as the area around the lake has blossomed with vibrantly colored flowers.

One can have a rendezvous with this ravishing lake as train and buses operate from the capital, New Delhi to Haridwar. Upon reaching Haridwar, you can take a bus for Uttarkashi. Both private, as well as state-owned buses, operate from Haridwar at regular intervals. After that, a further 220 km drive will make you reach Bhatwari.
