Auli Skiing Winter Carnival & National Winter Games 2026

The Auli Skiing Winter Carnival and National Winter Games 2026 will take place from February 13–16 in Auli, Chamoli district.

The event will feature national-level competitions in alpine skiing, snowboarding, and ski mountaineering, along with cultural programs and adventure activities to showcase local traditions.

The Uttarakhand Tourism Development Council has reviewed arrangements covering safety, participant facilities, and inter-department coordination.

Event Schedule:

  • Feb 13: Registration & cultural programs
  • Feb 14–15: Alpine skiing & snowboarding competitions
  • Feb 16: Ski mountaineering sprint events, closing ceremony & prize distribution

Snowfall Draws Tourists to Auli, Frost Disrupts Road Traffic

Fresh snowfall has attracted tourists to Auli, a popular winter sports hub, but frost-covered roads are hampering vehicular movement to the destination.

Officials said frost on the Auli Road—particularly near Sunil, TV Tower, and Kichad Bend—is causing traffic congestion. As per Jyotirmath Police Station, tourist vehicles are currently not being allowed from Jyotirmath to Auli, with only four-wheel-drive and local vehicles permitted.

Joshimath-Auli Ropeway to Get a Modern Upgrade with Rs 480 Crore Project DPR Submitted

Efforts are underway to revamp the Joshimath-Auli ropeway, replacing the old structure closed due to the 2023 land subsidence. Bridkul has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth Rs 480 crore to the government, with construction set to begin soon.

The 4.5 km ropeway will be developed in two phases:

  • Phase 1: A 2.76 km stretch from Tower No. 3 in Joshimath to Auli, featuring 11 towers and advanced mono cables. It will include a gondola system with 21 gondolas, each accommodating 6-7 passengers.
  • Phase 2: A 1.85 km section from Auli to Gorson, equipped with 7 towers and 9 gondolas.

This upgraded system will handle approximately 500 passengers per hour, enhancing the travel experience to Auli with greater ease and excitement.

IMD Issues Alert in Avalanche-Hit Chamoli; Tourist Entry Banned in Auli

Following a massive avalanche in Mana, India’s first village, the local administration has restricted tourist entry into Auli until weather conditions improve in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert for the region, predicting rain, snowfall, and blizzards from March 3 onward.

Authorities have evacuated Auli, Niti Valley, and Kunwari Pass, with tourists being sent back since March 1 due to safety concerns. Entry into Auli will only be permitted once the weather stabilizes, likely by Tuesday.

National Winter Games in Auli Postponed Due to Lack of Adequate Snowfall

Despite a heavy snowfall on December 9 and occasional light spells since, Auli’s snow cover remains insufficient for hosting skiing competitions. This is not the first time inadequate snowfall has disrupted alpine skiing events on Auli’s renowned Nanda Devi Skiing Slope.

Ajay Bhatt, General Secretary of the Winter Games Federation, confirmed the postponement. Members of the Uttarakhand Ski and Snowboard Association, including Vivek Panwar and Ravindra Kandhari, along with local skiers, have expressed their disappointment over the delay. Check skiing in Auli.

From Kedarnath to Auli, Dhanaulti to Mussoorie, the second snowfall of the season has occurred. Light snowfall started in the high altitude areas of the state from Sunday evening and its still snowing at some places. The second snowfall of the season occurred on Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Harshil, Chopta, Tungnath, Suki Top, Auli and Mussoorie and other peaks.
