Activities In Joshimath

Joshimath is a place of activities where every corner has great myths, adventure and provides internal peace to the tourists. It is equally a spiritual and adventure place for the dedicated pilgrims. In Joshimath tourist have multiple choices to engage them through various activities.

Temple Visit

There is only one temple to visit which have its own importance among devotees. The name of the temple is Narsingh which is dedicated to Lord Narsingh, who is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple is considered to be the home of Shri Badrinath.

Nanda Devi National Park

If you really want to get yourself lost in the beauty nature, then this is the place belongs to you. It is located in Chamoli district and has spectacular destinations like Valley of flowers, Govind Ghat, Hemkund Sahib, Badrinath Dham etc. This park has rich flora and fauna and hunting for animals and cutting trees is banned here. For camping here you need to take prior permissions from authorities. This place is simply "Heaven on Earth".

Skiing

This adventurous activity takes place in Auli, which is around 16 kilometers from Joshimath. If you want to enjoy the eternal bliss of snow then visit this place from December end to March. Auli is often compared with best ski resorts of the world by foreigners, and its slopes provide enough thrills to professional skier and beginner as well. All facilities for skiing are available from Gharwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd. (GMVNL) with certificate courses ranging from 4 days to 14 days, which include stay, food, ski gear charges and guide.

Trekking

Joshimath is the base for trekking routes like Hemkunth Sahib, Govind Ghat and Valley of flowers. You can take a taxi or a bus till Govind Ghat , which is around 26 kilometers from Joshimath. From there, start trekking uphill to Govind Dham , which is 13 kilometers away. Camping or lodging within the Valley of Flowers is not permitted. The sight of the colorful valley filled with blooming flowers surrounded by snow capped peaks is truly mesmerizing.

Village Tourism

In respect to village and rural tourism, Joshimath comes second to none. There are many picturesque villages and hamlets in and around Joshimath that offer a sneak peek into the culture, traditional and lifestyle prevailing in the region. Tourists not only enjoy the scenic beauty encapsulating the villages but also partake in the various customs and become a part of the family. Villages and hamlets such as Mana, Niti, Malari and Thaing are wonderful destination to partake in village tourism opportunities. For instance, the Malari village consists of Bhotia, Marchhas and Tolchas people which are known for their exquisite handicrafts, handlooms and knitwear.

Cable Car

Here you can find Asia’s highest and longest cable car covering which covers a distance of 4 kilometers between Joshimath and Auli. It is named as ‘Gondola’ the cable car at Auli also has a Chair Lift and a Ski-Lift. This ropeway takes around 15 to 20 minutes to reach Auli from Joshimath. At a time it can carry around 25 passengers. The ride to Auli costs INR 500 including the return journey to Joshimath.

Camping

There are many camps in Joshimath like Himalayan Eco Lodge & camps, Char Dham Camps etc who organize many adventure camps and activities for the tourist at many places of Joshimath. These adventure activities include skiing and chair car ride in Auli, trekking, camping etc.
