The reopening of Badrinath Temple marks the beginning of the annual pilgrimage season in the Garhwal Himalayas. Before the temple doors are opened to devotees, a series of traditional rituals are performed by the Rawal (chief priest) and temple authorities.
One of the important rituals is the arrival of the sacred Gadu Ghada (oil vessel), which is used in religious ceremonies before the opening of the shrine. Vedic mantras are chanted and special pujas are conducted before the first darshan of the season.
