Badrinath Heli Services – A Faster, Safer Way to Reach the Shrine
Reaching Badrinath Temple by helicopter has become one of the most convenient and time-saving options for pilgrims visiting the Char Dham in Uttarakhand. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks along the Alaknanda River, Badrinath is both spiritually powerful and geographically remote — which is why heli services are increasingly popular, especially among senior citizens and time-bound travelers.
To further ease travel during the Char Dham Yatra, the Uttarakhand government has announced the launch of a helicopter shuttle service to Badrinath Temple, similar to the existing Kedarnath model.
The new shuttle service will operate from Gauchar helipad to Badrinath, with a one-way flight duration of approximately 22 minutes. The ticket fare will be INR 11,000 per person (round trip for Gauchar - Badrinath - Gauchar).
Tenders for operating the Badrinath shuttle service have already been issued. Once operational, helicopter tickets will also be available for booking through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website.

Badrinath Temple is located at an altitude of about 3,133 metres in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Although the temple is connected by road, the journey from Dehradun, Haridwar or Rishikesh can take 10 to 12 hours depending on weather and traffic conditions.
The proposed Badrinath helicopter shuttle service will significantly reduce travel time and make the pilgrimage more convenient for senior citizens, families with children and devotees who have limited time for the Char Dham Yatra.
Once operational, pilgrims will be able to reach Badrinath from Gauchar in around 20 to 25 minutes. The service is expected to provide a faster alternative to long mountain road journeys while improving accessibility during the yatra season.
Badrinath heli services typically operate from designated helipads in Uttarakhand such as:
Helicopter services may be:
As of now the shuttle services to Badrinath are not yet operational. But we have following luxury charter helicopter tours which includes Badrinath Dham visit along with other dhams. Several private helicopter companies offer luxury tour packages for Kedarnath-Badrinath as well as chartered Char Dham tours departing from Dehradun. Please note that these are exclusive charter services, with costs ranging from Rs. 1,20,000 to Rs. 2,25,000 per person.
The cost of Badrinath helicopter services depends on the type of travel option selected:
Prices may vary based on operator, season, and availability.
The helicopter journey duration varies depending on the departure location:
The Badrinath Helipad is located approximately 1 kilometre from Badrinath Temple. After landing, pilgrims can reach the temple area by walking or using locally available transportation, depending on operational arrangements during the pilgrimage season.
The short distance between the helipad and the shrine makes helicopter travel a practical option for devotees seeking quicker access to the temple.
Badrinath Temple remains open for pilgrims from April or May until October or November each year. Helicopter services, whenever approved and launched, are expected to run during the same pilgrimage season.
The highest demand is usually witnessed during May, June, September and October when weather conditions are comparatively stable and pilgrim footfall remains high.
During the monsoon season from July to August, helicopter schedules may be affected because of poor visibility, rainfall and operational safety requirements.
Helicopter tour to Badrinath is expected to benefit pilgrims who wish to avoid long road journeys through mountainous terrain. It can be especially useful for travellers who have limited time available for the sacred yatra.
Helipads on the way to Badrinath Dham include the following key locations
Sahastradhara Helipad (Dehradun): The primary starting point for helicopter services to Badrinath, offering flights that take approximately 50 minutes to reach the destination.
Gauchar Helipad: A significant operational base, with services expected to begin at the earliest for Badrinath.
Joshimath Helipad: Another potential departure point, facilitating access to Badrinath, especially for regional connectivity.
Badrinath Helipad: The final landing site, located about 1 km from the Badrinath Temple, serving as the endpoint for helicopter journeys.
Note: These helipads are part of the planned helicopter services to enhance pilgrimage convenience, with operations subject to weather conditions and government approvals. For the most current details, check official tourism or IRCTC website as the season progresses.
As of now, regular helicopter shuttle services for Badrinath have not started. However, the Uttarakhand government is actively pursuing approvals for the project. Once launched, the service is expected to improve connectivity between Gauchar and Badrinath and provide pilgrims with a faster travel option during the Char Dham Yatra season.
A heli shuttle service is a transportation option that uses helicopters to transport passengers between designated points on a fixed route and schedule, similar to a shuttle bus or train service. These services are often used to connect airports, cities, or remote locations quickly, bypassing road traffic.
At present, shuttle service is running smoothly in Kedarnath. Apart from Kedarnath, shuttle service is also being operated in Vaishno Devi temple of Jammu and Kashmir. As of now Heli Shuttle Services are only booked via IRCTC Website.
The Uttarakhand government has sent a proposal to the Union civil aviation ministry to operate a chopper shuttle service from Jyotirmath (earlier Joshimath) to Badrinath in Chamoli district, a senior official said.
Date: 7 June 2025
The Uttarakhand state government has now once again made a concrete proposal for Badrinath Heli Services and sent it to the Center. Many heli companies had shown interest in it, but without the approval of the central government, these services could not be started.
If Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Secretary Sachin Kurve is to be believed, this time a better proposal has been made and sent. It is hoped that something better can be done in this direction in the coming time. He said that due to the start of the shuttle service, passengers will get a lot of convenience.
