Taptakund, as the name suggests is a hot water spring, which lies between Badrinath shrine and Alaknanda River. This thermal spring is situated in the Badrinath temple in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The Taptakund is a natural hot water spring, having 45 degrees temperature.
In-spite of the freezing temperature and snowfall, Taptakund extracts hot water and is regarded as the residing place of Agni Deva. The water of Taptakund comes from the ‘Garur Shila’ and flows into a concrete stone tank. The nearby cities are Karnaprayag, Nainisain, Kandara, Khatyari and Srinagar.
The hot spring is situated on the right just before the entrance of the Badrinath temple. It is situated very near the Badrinath temple so that devotees can take a dip before entering the holy shrine as it is a common ritual. It is located between the Alaknanda River and the holy shrine of Badrinath. Tourists can reach Tapt Kund via NH-58 from Rishikesh to Badrinath. The Badrinath temple is just 10 minutes away from the bus stand. Just before the Badrinath temple, there is the Tapt Kund on the right side.
It is believed that having a sacred bath in Taptakund cures all body ailments as it possesses healing qualities. The pilgrims believe that having a holy dip in this hot water spring imparts goodness and purifies the soul. Therefore, it has become a common practice before entering the Badrinath temple.
According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Ganga River after coming from the divine feet of Sriman Narayana was born from the dreadlocks of Lord Shiva. As it emerged from the Kapala of Shiva, it is said that the water of Tapta Kund is hotter.
Taptakund is located between Badrinath temple and Alaknanda River. One can easily access this place as the roads of Badrinath are well connected with major townships of Uttarakhand. Jolly Grant airport is the nearest domestic airport, located 310 km away from Badrinath and the nearest railhead is also at Dehradun.
