Doon Ice Skating Rink is India’s first artificial, Olympic-sized (60m x 30m) indoor ice skating rink, with a seating capacity of around 3,000.
The rink was recently renovated and re-inaugurated on May 5, 2025, by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, marking a significant step for winter sports in India. The facility, now operated under a public-private partnership, aims to attract tourists and athletes, positioning Dehradun as a winter sports destination.
Himadri Ice Rink, originally built in 2010 for the 2011 South Asian Winter Games, it hosted events like the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Challenge Cup of Asia in 2012. However, high maintenance costs—over Rs 30,000 daily for electricity and specialized equipment—led to its closure for nearly 13 years.
5 May 2025: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the renovated ice rink at Maharana Pratap Sports College, Dehradun, marking a significant milestone for Uttarakhand and India. The rink, now enhanced with a 1 MW solar plant, promises to host national and international ice skating events, elevating the state's sports landscape.
